The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was sentenced of plotting a government overthrow in September and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".
Court Filing Details Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the detention, the magistrate said intelligence from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the protest called by his son.
His child, his son Flávio, who serves as a senator, called for a gathering of his followers near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
The senator wrote on social media on Friday: Will you battle for your country, or observe everything from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so backers could offer prayers for his health and for the return of democracy in our land."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's ruling was the possibility of his move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of planning to ask for protection through a embassy office", a announcement said.
The legal document underscores that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brazil's capital, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist United States President President Trump, prompting him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.
He is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a detention review on the next day.
Recent Judicial Appeals
It was only on Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.
They also requested that he be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other ailments.
Context of Sentencing
Bolsonaro was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plot which included plans to kill Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.
The scheme was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters stormed and vandalised government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The law enforcement stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The justices found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and reinstate his authority.
At the time, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also banned from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the completion of his term.
The ex-leader called the court case a "witch hunt and said it was intended to stop him competing in the 2026 national vote.
