Defense Department Investigation Concludes Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in dispute contained details about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually did so.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the inspector general to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been provided to Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be released in the coming days.
