Around 50 cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, building surfaces and postal boxes were defaced, occasionally with swastikas, they reported in a release.
Police report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The fluid had been drawn in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Police then located multiple other vandalized cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws outlawing the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police state preliminary tests suggest the liquid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no lead as to its source; officials are not yet aware of any harm in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the case" and have appealed to the public for tips.
An important political figure stated the vandalism rendered him speechless and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident affects the center of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the killing of nine individuals by a gunman targeting residents of foreign heritage in 2020.
